Hi there! I hope you enjoyed a perfect summer weekend! My weekend was more on the productive side. After a bit of a stressful week, I would have preferred to drink a cold La Croix while lounging by the pool. My fingers are crossed for that one next Saturday! Scott and I spent our time apartment hunting, and we all know how stressful that can be. We did narrow it down between two places and plan to make a decision within the next few days. Sometimes you just have to get things done!
Tag, You Are It
One thing I have not been getting done over the past week or so is workouts. I mentioned recently that I have been trying to get my time at the gym complete in the morning. Well, for whatever reason I cannot seem to make this simple schedule swap. When it comes to exercise, I have always preferred to do it later in the day and moving it to the morning is hugely challenging for me. Go figure. Factor in the Texas heat, and my motivation waxes and wanes throughout the day to about zero. This happened three days in a row last week. Heck, at least I posted a workout on the blog so I got in some ab work.
Scott, on the other hand, has been dealing with some other issues that have been a bit of a damper on motivation. As I shared recently in Does She Even Lift? it is oddly difficult for trainers to work out themselves. Shocking right? They love working out. They are in a gym environment all day every day! Due to the schedule demands however the opportunities are few and far between. Scott has also been struggling with a few physical issues that have plague him since his career as a dancer (back and knee pain).
Between the two of us we cannot exactly claim to be “the fit couple” these days. I am sure my motivation will resurface – it usually does at some point! I have definitely had times when I needed more off-days than usual. We mutually dragged each other to the gym late yesterday afternoon. It was not planned, but we ended up randomly doing a little role switch. He is normally the “coach” role whenever we work out together. It is just our default dynamic since that is how we met when he was my trainer at the gym. Yesterday I put our workout together, and I made all the decisions. I think it was kind of nice for both of us. I got to enjoy being bossy, and he got a break from being the trainer.
Change, releasing control and letting someone else take the lead can be oddly liberating. As a coach and a trainer myself I always encourage people to develop a true support system when it comes to their goals. It does not have to be your husband, boyfriend, wife or girlfriend necessarily. It can be anyone in your life where you can forge this connection. We always undervalue having that person in our lives, but it is crucial at the gym too. Even the most determined soul will have days where the “get up and go” has gone out to lunch.
What did we do with our time at the gym? We played around with the machines, performed partner exercises with the med balls, and did not have any type of serious game plan. In fact, it was nice to just make it fun for a change. Sometimes we can get a little too lost in our physical or competition goals. Sometimes I get a little stuck in checking off exercises to mark them as done rather than simply enjoying the time.
It is a marathon, not a sprint, and it is important to not always be so serious. Take a step back. For me, it can help me find my motivation again. Maybe it can for you when you are having a tough day. Tag, you are it.
Have a wonderful Monday, and I will see you back here tomorrow.
Question of the Day:
- Do you ever lose you workout motivation?
- How do you keep stay inspired?
I always love hearing from you! If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.
