Happy mid-week greetings from Austin! Hope your week is moving along well. Things are going well here as we are enjoying a completely lovely spell of weather. Scott and I even managed to sit by our pool for a little while before dinner yesterday. I am loving the cooler temps here right now. It is so refreshing and makes me want to be outside all the time.
WIAW #11: The Great Avocado Shortage
Yesterday featured a fairly typical day of eating for me except for one small change. I tried to be more conscientious of my protein intake. When I first started working out I was really diligent about it, but as my diet has changed I find it harder to get it in. I no longer use whey protein in my post-workout shakes, I consume less dairy and less chicken. With less option a girl is bound to take a hit. I thought it was fine, except, I was reading a similar post on A Lady Goes West last week, and she shared her protein consumption for the day. It got me to think that maybe mine has taken a little too much of a dip. So I am experimenting with finding some new sources and seeing how I feel.
Below is a recap of what I ate Wednesday (or Tuesday)….
Breakfast – Scrambled pasture-raised eggs, a slice of Food for Life 7 Sprouted Grain toast with Kerrygold butter, almond butter and cinnamon, a few organic strawberries and coffee. I finally took a break from oatmeal! This was a perfect way to go.
If only I had some avocado…ours are sitting in what Scott calls our “basin” waiting to get ripe from my grocery trip on Monday.
Scott and I met years ago because he was my trainer at the local gym. He worked with me until he moved to Texas two years ago, and then he would write my workouts for me and we would talk them through. I had worked out on my own for quite a while now, but I had noticed lately my knees were started to bothering me and I was worried I may be doing something wrong. It can be very difficult to judge your own form which is why I highly recommend finding a good trainer if you can. Right now he is training me again twice a week in our garage gym. I made sure to guzzle plenty of water during our workout together…
Post-Workout Shake – Organic mixed berries from the Joe’s, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, vanilla Sunwarrior protein, Collagen protein powder, MCT oil and Amazing Greens with ice. It was nice, but the fruit did not thoroughly blend. Our Magic Bullet has been dying a low and painful death, and we are reminded every time we use it.
Lunch – Tuna salad with unsweetened iced green tea. This tuna salad was similar to the one I shared last week, but since I did not have any avocado I used plain Greek yogurt as a base. The salad included organic romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, English cucumber and orange pepper. Dressing included olive oil and white wine vinegar. The salad tasted fine, but I missed the presence of avocado. I am such a creature of habit, and usually have almost a half of one a day.
There were a few squares of chocolate afterwards too. Plus more iced coffee. I am sure that Wonder Woman would approve. 🙂
What I did not eat in avocado, I made up for in coffee consumption yesterday. It is sort of frustrating because I had completely cut caffeine out of my diet as a way to better manage my chronic headaches. I wanted to add it back in a little bit, but I have gone a tad overboard since Cold Brew was introduced into my life, and it is not commercially available in decaf. I will have to try and work on getting my amount down a bit over the next few weeks.
Afternoon Snack – After researching some new bars online I decided to pick up a Quest Bar to try out. I had thought they all used artificial sweeteners which I had cut out of my diet several years back after reading how horrible they can be on your body. However, Quest does carry a line of natural bars sweetened with Stevia and they contain 20 grams of protein so I thought I would give them a go. They are fairly chewy, but had a very nice flavor.
Dinner – Pasture-raised lamb, asparagus and butternut squash with brown rice. I purchased this bag from Trader Joe’s the other day and thought it would be enough for Scott and me. It indicated four servings on the nutritional information, but when I pulled it out of the oven there was very little food. I happened to have some leftover brown rice in the refrigerator so I mixed it in to make it more substantial. Avocado could have been nice with this meal too. I enjoyed a glass of chilled white wine on the side.
Speaking of alcohol, I probably have a few glasses of wine a week. Scott does not drink really at all, and maybe has a glass of wine a month. It has never been a big deal to us, but we were talking about it the other night. It seemed like an interesting topic for a podcast so we recorded a discussion on it. Well, I am off to do some research online, and work my way through some emails. I already finished one iced coffee…oops. So I am off for a refill and to make some breakfast. Have a good one!
