Greetings! I hope you had a lovely weekend. As I mentioned on Friday, Scott and I are in the early stages of getting prepared to move. A lot of recent conversations have been surrounding packing up our things and moving across the city. Which place? Where? When? You get the idea. Well, all this packing chit chat had me thinking a lot about my closet, and the wardrobe it contains. I have been tossing around the concept of what I consider to be my summer style essentials.
We are all out and about more in the summertime. Our invitations range from parties to BBQ’s, and we often need to whip up an outfit that can work for whatever may come up. Versatility is the key here. We want to get more out of less. More style in each and every outfit.
The ensemble I stepped out in yesterday afternoon pretty much sums up my summer style essentials. I am a huge fan of classic styles that can easily be dressed up or down with accessories. As my taste in clothing evolves I am beginning to see quality is usually king. You should buy the right things that fit your lifestyle, and stick with the tried and true.
These are my summer style essentials. Read on to learn more about my rationale. Please share your must-haves in the comments section below!

Summer Style Essentials
I like to wear jeans all year round. At a certain point, the dark denim starts to feel a little more suited for winter. My white jeans are a little shorter to accommodate sandals, and I wear them constantly. They go with everything and can easily be worn shopping, going to lunch, or a nighttime outing. They are such a classic item that I feel you cannot go wrong.
Rumor is they even relaxed the rule of no white after Labor Day! I am not sure who was behind that brilliant move, but apparently it is totally cool to go beyond the “summertime” window. This makes them an even better investment because you can rock them in the spring and into early fall. Their versatility makes them a win-win.
Speaking of sandals….well, I love them. This particular pair was an amazing find from Piperlime.
It is so rare to buy a pair of shoes online and have them fit perfectly. These did! Neutral sandals are great, but I like the pop of color these provide. Find a good pair of sandals that blends in with your wardrobe so you do not need a million pairs. Honestly, it is better to wear them out and buy new ones in a season or two.
Bags are very individual. You can choose big or small depending on your personal preference. I like a pop of color and found this print to be a very fun add.
The green is neutral enough to blend with other colors, but it has some personality of its own. You can truly make an outfit dressy or more casual depending on the shoes, bag and jewelry. It is all about the accessories folks!
The more the better in my option! Ok, do not go crazy at the next sale at The Gap, but stock up a bit. I find that t-shirts and tank tops do not stand the test of time. They get worn out, and often develop snags or holes in the fabric. Buy enough to wear and know that you will most likely have to retire a few at the end of the summer. I have bought shirts in all different price ranges, and it is a mystery to me why some just withstand more abuse. This one is from Express which tends to be a good resource for sale items.
Scott (aka my photographer) was skeptical about this one. A denim jacket in Austin? We totally support this cowgirl friendly fabric, but it is a tad hot for such things. However, I think this is a major item many people overlook. The hotter it is the more restaurants, movie theaters and shops jack up their air conditioning. Sometimes I step into these places, and I am absolutely freezing.
A denim jacket is a perfect item to have “just in case.”
Sunglasses are an area where I feel investing is important. Scott and I totally disagree here, and he is often searching for the sportiest pair he can find at our neighborhood grocery store. You know – the kind that do not come with protective cases. Somehow he is always shocked they break so easily. Investing in good glasses is really key to protect your eyes from UV damage from sunlight when you are outdoors. Plus, these are summer style essentials, but you can easily wear them all year round. Plus, it doubles as a headband when you are in a pinch.
Is this a beauty item or a fashion statement? To me, it is a little bit of both.
I think color on your nails can definitely add some pizazz to your outfit! I did not intentionally match my nails to my shirt, but I love it when these happy accidents happen.
Not to be outdone by my style post, Scott snagged this selfie when we were out and about in Austin yesterday.
A button down is one of his top picks for any of the guys out there! Same philosophy – dress it up or dress it down. We believe in being flexible around here at The Bikini Experiment. Scott is my only (unpaid) staff member so of course we are on the same page here.
Do your best to look at the big picture and plan your budget and shopping accordingly. Maybe it is the season of your dream pair of sunglasses. To each his own. It is all about what is important to you.
