Happiness is a Warm Puppy…Charles Schultz, Cartoonist “Peanuts”
This past weekend was completely unexpected in many ways. In fact, as I type up this post I am still so surprised how Pendlay, our new chocolate lab mix puppy entered our lives on Friday evening. As I mentioned in Friday’s post, the only plans we had this weekend were to go to the movies to see Gone Girl. However, there was a twist with a wonderful surprise in store just around the corner (literally).
To fill you in I have to back up to Friday evening…
I usually take a walk after I have finished working and studying for the afternoon as a break. I typically walk a path that is behind our apartment complex because it provides the most shade. Avoiding direct sun is crucial around 5:30 or so because it is the hottest time of the day in Austin. Friday afternoon was relatively cool in temperature so I decided to go in the opposite direction to walk up the hill where there is a church and a small soccer field.
Enter the Puppy
As I made my loop and was headed back to my apartment an adorable puppy ran up to me and start walking quickly beside me. I figured he had come off his leash and that his owner must be somewhere in the vicinity. However, as I kept moving along he was keeping pace with me and there was clearly no one around who was waiting for him. I was on the phone with my mom and was telling her the details as the whole situation unraveled. In order to concentrate on the matter at hand, we got off the phone and I still figured someone would pop up at any moment.
I then saw a woman with two very small dogs walking towards me and figured this one must belong to her as well. I was relieved that this puppy was not alone! However, that relief was incredibly short lived because she told me he did not belong to her. A huge fight almost ensued with her chihuahuas. I swear you cannot make this stuff up! Total chaos on the streets in the Texas suburbs.
We quickly parted ways since the dogs were about to attack each other again, but she told me to call the animal shelter and see what I should do. Apparently, a lot of dogs had been abandoned recently in that area. I called the animal shelter, and they indicated the soonest I would be able to drop him off was Saturday so he was ours for the night no matter what.
I was almost back home so I called Scott who was working out in our garage gym. I told him what had happened and that I would be coming by with the dog. His only words to me? “We can’t keep him!”
The Power of Attraction
The ironic part is that Scott and I have been talking about getting a dog for a quite a while. We have a puppy calendar in our kitchen.
I had the identical one in my apartment in New Jersey before I moved. We would talk about our future dog, and little details like name and breed. I had thought I had my heart set on a pug and was super excited when I found out there was a Pug Rescue of Austin. I told Scott that very Friday afternoon that when we had a dog we could take him to Yappy Hour at Whole Foods.
So in a nutshell the topic came up quite a bit.
For a variety of reasons we had determined it was not the right time to get a puppy yet and that we would wait. However, we did have a name picked out – Pendlay. Glenn Pendlay is one of the most decorated coaches in weightlifting history and the owner/founder of Muscle Driver USA. The most significant pieces we own in the gym are Pendlay (bars, plates). The name had particular significance to Scott, and I thought it was totally cute and original.
Scott protests were silenced almost immediately when the puppy and I got to the garage and Pendlay practically jumped into his arms. Puppy love at its best folks. It was heart melting.
We scrambled to figure out how to feed him and get him situated for the night as he started to adjust to us and his new surroundings.
As we were unwinding for the night, Scott turned to me and asked if I wanted to keep him.
I said yes, but I already knew that he was ours from the start.
We decided to take a rain check on our movie date to take a little shopping trip…and stay with Pendlay so we could make sure he was adjusting.
This was his first car ride on a trip to CVS this weekend. I think it is just the start of our adventures together.
We also enjoyed lots of fun walks together…does it get any better than the shadow game?
Welcome to our lives Pen – we are going to love you like crazy! 🙂 This was certainly a marvelous turn of events!
Question of the Day: If you own a dog was it love at first sight?
