Cheers for Healthy Cocktails
As the clock winds down on New Year’s Eve we all want to sip a celebratory drink to mark the end of another year. BUT…
Can you enjoy a few cocktails while sticking to a healthy lifestyle? The answer is YES, but there are a few things to keep in mind. As with most things in life you need to make good choices.
You are already dealing with extra calories with whichever alcohol you are choosing. By adding in sugary mixers or juices you are often dealing with hundreds of extra calories. Plus a lot of sugar. Lots and lots of sugar.
Some good selections are red wine, champagne and mixed drinks with seltzer and lime or lemon. Maybe you are thinking that’s awesome. However, for a special night you might want a little more pizazz. Well, then you are going to flip over this Moscow mule!
The Moscow Mule is also known as the Vodka Buck and it is mostly made with high-quality vodka, a spicy ginger beer and lime juice. It is typically served in a copper mug. The cocktail became popular during the vodka craze during the 1950s. The name refers to the perception of vodka as a Russian product. Pretty nifty, right?
To make this a healthy choice I made a few substitutions. I swapped Ginger Kombucha for the beer and juiced a lime to get a no-sugar juice for the cocktail. A touch of maple syrup turned out to be just enough to take away the tart taste of the citrus without adding much sugar.
- 8 oz Ginger Kombucha
- 2.5 oz Vodka
- Juice of ½ Lime
- ⅛ Teaspoon Pure Maple Syrup
- 4-5 Ice Cubes
- Mix all of the ingredients together and stir.
- Add ice and serve in your copper mug.
- Enjoy your celebration, but make sure to focus on protein and veggies in your meal.
- Stay hydrated through the night. Alternate your drinks with a non-alcoholic choice (flat or sparkling water).
- Don’t go crazy and try to stick to two cocktails, three at the most. We all know it is never worth it the next day.
Happy New Year! I will see you tomorrow with the community calendar for January. We are going to kick off the month with an awesome start. So excited to share it with you!
