Top of the morning to you! I was very flattered when I received an email from Williams-Sonoma recently asking me to be part of a Question and Answer discussion on juicing. Juicing is not currently part of my daily routine. However, my mother was an avid juicer for quite some time, and I have read a lot on the subject. I currently do not own a juicer – it is on my wish list. So I usually only treat myself if I am out and about in Austin. The downtown Whole Foods location has a great juice bar that offers a lot of different options.
Juicing Q&A with Williams-Sonoma
Q) I noticed you have a passion for wellness, what are some ingredients that someone can use in a juice recipe that have anti-inflammatory properties?
A) In my experience, the best ingredients to look for in a juice are ginger, cayenne, turmeric and lemon juice.
These are ALL substances that decrease inflammation, but we often do often get in our daily diets. I will look for any juice I consume to contain at least one of these ingredients.
Q) Some juices can contain a lot of sugar, which many may not realize. For someone who juices on a regular basis how would you suggest they avoid creating juice high in sugar? Should they use more vegetables in their juice recipe.
A) Absolutely! When I first started to become interested in healthy eating I ate way too much fruit. Fruit is wonderful for you, but not in huge quantities. Even though it is a natural sugar, our insulin can still spike as if we just had a cookie.
When I am selecting a juice, I try to find one that is mostly all green vegetables with one of the following for sweetness: apple, orange, carrots or beets. Carrots and beets are vegetables of course, but they have significantly more sugar than green vegetables such as kale, cucumber or celery. If you have too much sugar you are undoing the benefit of having a juice.
Q) With the holidays coming up people will be getting back into their juice cleanses. What are some tips you have for beginners? Any recipes you have used or heard working great that you can suggest?
A) I have never done a complete juice cleanse. I think juicing can be an excellent way to supplement a healthy eating plan when incorporated correctly. Juice is a wonderful source of nutrients, however, there is no protein or fiber or any of the other things we need to function properly. I would caution anyone doing a complete juice cleanse than they are at a risk for losing muscle mass.
If you truly want to go the route of doing a juice cleanse then I would recommend getting plenty of sleep, keeping your workouts light and only stay on it a few days at most. The reason you need to keep your workouts easy is that you will not be able to repair properly afterwards through food or protein.
I think juice can be great, and I do enjoy these drinks as part of my diet. When I eventually do buy a juicer I am sure I will have them more frequently. My favorite greens juice that I get at Whole Foods regularly is their Apple Super Greens. This blend includes kale, spinach, apple, lemon and ginger. It is just sweet enough, and contains both lemon and ginger.
