Feeling the burn at a Barre3 class! As we are all aware fitness motivation comes in many forms. Often getting out of the “same ole” and signing up for a class works like a charm. Classes are a great way to mix it up, be social and bring a bit of fun to fitness. Follow along as I share my experience with this new workout phenomenon.
Feeling the Burn at Barre3
It is so easy to let your workouts become a little too predictable. Plus since so many workouts are done solo it is so refreshing to feed off the energy of a group of like minded people. I wanted to explain the details of a Barre3 class and also some of the do’s and don’t if you plan to check it out for yourself. Being comfortable with the right clothing and approach will make a huge difference in your experience!
You can either setup a profile and book a class online or call the studio you choose to attend. I dropped in because I knew I was attending the class at an off-peak time. I would personally recommend reserving a spot because nothing is more frustrating that getting excited to go to a class, drive there and find out it is booked.
What to Wear
The Barre3 studio was on the warmer side, and I could feel it immediately. I wore a warm up jacket, leggings and a tank top. I definitely recommend a tank or sleeveless top since there is a lot of overhead movement. Sleeves would feel a tad restrictive.
I knew from reading a little about barre classes online that I should take some yoga socks with me. These were hugely helpful!
Barre3 definitely has a community focus which you can tell from their signs and programs. A Barre3 challenge and the birthday program were just two examples that I saw displayed on the walls. Overall the studio was small, but very cozy with lots of lively color.
There were cubbies to put away all my things (my purse, jackets and shoes). I hung on to my water bottle and that was really all I needed.
As you enter the class, you grab the necessary equipment for your setup. There are rolls of small white towels and small black weights (1-2 lbs.). I grabbed the 2 lbs. along with a towel and headed into the studio.
You select your “spot” within the barre that wraps around the room. There were already balls placed there to be used in the later portion of the class.
Barre3 Class Format
Duration: 1 Hour
Class Format: There are three sections divided evenly into approximately 20 minutes each.
- Warm Up – Conducted in the middle of the studio with an emphasis on movement in various squat positions. There were also a number of holds, stretches and Yoga-inspired poses. Plank variations and holds were a key feature here.
- Barre – We then headed to the barre and this is where it did indeed get a bit challenging. You hold various poses while using the barre for support. Most of the movements were lower body dominant as we held a squat for a length of time and then worked to hold it lower and lower. There were plié variations as well with raising up one heel, and then the other. While I do heavy weights as part of my workout the pulses and holds were not easy for me. I also appreciated that the instructor came around to correct my position at least once.
- Floor – While we were at the barre, floor mats were laid out for us and where we moved next to do our arm and core work. Here is where the small weights and balls came into play. We did a variety of lateral raises and triceps focused exercises. Then it was on the mat to do many leg lifts, core work and stretching exercises to round out the workout.
An individual class is $20. There are several class packages that can be purchased which provide a discount. Those prices will vary as to whether or not you are a new client. Childcare is an extra cost. There are also online classes options and an app available.
General Impression: The class is great, however, in my opinion I do not think you can only rely on Barre classes as a fully rounded fitness program. I do not think any one exercise type works in isolation for anyone. Strength and conditioning are still necessary as a focus and you will only get that work through larger movements. I think it is a perfect complement as part of a fitness regime to develop core strength, mobility and flexibility.
Difficulty Level: This is relative so I am hesitant to assign an exact number scale. I workout frequently so jumping into a new routine was challenging in that it was different. The pulses and holds I am not used to worked me in different ways. However, if you are new to exercise the class could potentially be very hard. I would certainly still go, but recognize you will need to modify exercises throughout the class.
Pros: The format of the class and the environment.
Cons: The downside is the price. If you already belong to a gym this could be a heavy price tag for classes. Barre3 is expanding, but it is not currently offered everywhere.
Overtall Impression: Barre3 is defined as where ballet barre meets yoga and pilates. After taking a class, I feel that definition is more than accurate. I also totally approve of their full body workout style with a glute emphasis. In my opinion, this is the most effective way for women to build their athleticism.
