The gym. Love it or hate it?
Many of us love the routine of getting away from it all, and focusing on a workout for an hour or so. I know that pretty much sums me up. However, it is not uncommon to be in the position where you need to take a breather. Perhaps you cannot get there because the hours or location are inconvenient. Maybe the cost (and the threat of a year-long contract is overwhelming). You could simply have the desire to shake things up a bit! Well, I am going to share a few suggestions of some easy ways to workout for free!
Easy Ways to Workout for Free
The sun is shining and the birds are singing! Summer is very much here. It is also a wonderful time of year to mix up your routine and get some workouts in outside. If you want to get in your cardio, but have zero access to equipment this is the way to go. We are fortunate during the summer months that we can simply grab our sneakers, sunscreen and see where the world will take us. Go for a run, a walk and enjoy the fresh air.
Depending on your locale it is usually best to attempt this early in the morning or in the evening after dinner. Walking may not be super intense, but it is a wonderful way to get in movement. Plus you can unwind and enjoy a fun playlist or catch up on the phone.
Find a local hiking trail
This is one of my favorites since I really enjoy finding local spots. Austin has a lot of hiking trails that I have not explored yet. There is usually no charge and it is so versatile because you can easily do it with a friend or simply tackle it on your own.
However, you can find any in a given area by visiting the almighty google. Scott and I went to Mount Bonnell on Sunday morning last week and were saying we need to make it more of a weekly routine. There is just something refreshing about getting outside.
One of my future plans for The Bikini Experiment is to start filming and sharing fitness videos on You Tube. I am not quite there yet since editing and filming is a complicated process. However, it is amazing what you can find out there via this online channel.
I am currently using a lot of Leslie Fightmaster’s yoga segments to replace my typical yoga classes that I attend. I love the in-person experience, but the cost of any class really does add up quickly. This has been a great way to keep some guidance in my routine without paying for a pass to attend the yoga studio that I frequent in downtown Austin.
Plus the commute cannot be beat. 🙂
If you do a little research you can usually find a place to enjoy a little swimming. To this day it always takes me back to growing up. Swimming is fun and low-impact to boot.
Public pools, beaches or lakes are great options. Sometimes you have to pay a small fee, but I think it is worth it. A lot of the places in Austin offer free entry during the week, and a daily rate on the weekend.
Free Class Trials
I have not taken enough advantage of the free class trials that are offered out there. Core Power Yoga and ClassPass immediately come to mind. There are two big advantages when it comes to these offers. You can see if the class would be worth it to find room in your budget eventually. Plus you can do a “dry run” to see if the schedule and location are convenient.
For example, I had a voucher to try a free Barre3 a few months back from the R3 Convention that I had attended. My verdict? There were lots of class offerings which was great. However, the studio was a little on the far side, and it was a little pricey. I enjoyed it so it is still on my radar as something I may do in the future.
Take it to the Track
So many tracks, so little time. You can find a track at any local high school or college! Beware of their schedule so you are not arriving at the same time as the football players. 🙂 At a track you can run, sprint and use the bleachers to run up and down or stretches.
A tough one! The jump rope is really humbling, but even a few minutes is a great workout. You can pick them up pretty much everywhere (Target and TJ Max come to mind) for a very low price point.
I recently posted a workout which incorporated a lot of use of the jump rope. Follow along or simply jump rope at your own pace.
When in doubt, push the coffee table away. After taking that early morning run or walk add on a bodyweight workout to target some of your smaller muscle groups and work on your definition. Weight training is vital to long term body strength, but I believe combining it with bodyweight or lighter weight exercises can really enhance your shape.
So many resources here. You can find numerous videos on You Tube or visit some of these posts on The Bikini Experiment to hopefully inspire your next workout!
