There is no doubt about it. Change is uncomfortable. The more we resist the feeling the more it seems to increase in intensity. It can creep up and make us feel like we want to give up and throw in the towel. Is the desire lost? No, but the ride has its moments where it is not really fun at all. Those old habits are calling your name. A salad does not feel comfortable at lunch when you are used to having pizza. Working out is not really as easy as it looks. Getting up with the sunrise to run? Dragging your tired self to the gym after work? These are not easy things to do. Changing your body composition and getting stronger does not happen overnight. The struggle is real.
Change is Uncomfortable
How does one embrace the process? It is a simple concept that is very hard to do. The answer? Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. We should not expect anything to come easily. Do not end up disappointed. Accept that your hard work and commitment is required from the beginning. Otherwise, how else would we truly value accomplishing our goal?
If you are pushing yourself hard enough working out will be tough. There will be moments where you want to stop. It gets easier, but only if you do not give up. If the willingness is there then your body, mind and spirit will catch up along the way. Make the most of your time and focus all of your efforts. Your body will thank you. It is a package deal.
Navigating food cravings and making the best choices can be uncomfortable. If you are not used to it even preparing meals to take for lunch during the week can feel a little out of place. I should know – it certainly felt strange to me too at one point!
Sometimes things have to get tough before they get better. The key is to hang in and wait for that next change. Make the uncomfortable choice. Allow yourself to be discouraged with slow progress, but do not give up. Sometimes we are not doing anything wrong. We are actually doing everything right.
Change is a process that is best attacked with small habit changes that we know are obtainable. As soon as one becomes easy it is time to add another. Some will feel like second nature and others might be a constant battle. For many, drinking enough water during the day can be a daily habit they always have to monitor. Worthwhile? Yes. Easy? No.
Sit with your discomfort until you know it as your new friend. It is not going anywhere. It is better to have a friend than a foe. Make peace with it. After all change is very often the herald of all possibility.
